River Pines was developed as a location for weekend or summer vacation properties for a growing middle class in the 1920s. A dam on the south fork of the Cosumnes River Pines was built to provide water activities and sports.
At the northernmost end of the county, sitting at an elevation of about 2000 feet, is the tiny community of River Pines. Located just nine miles from Plymouth, River Pines is an unspoiled hamlet near the Cosumnes River and nestled in the towering pines of the El Dorado National Forest.
